New feature...

I've added a new feature on the blog. It's a "how much I've saved by not smoking" counter. You will notice it right below the time counter on the upper right of the page. I have been looking for something like this for quite some time, and really haven't found anything that was what I wanted. That's still true, but I have settled on the one that is currently on the page.

Anyone who wants to write a little client side Javascript for me is more then welcome to get in touch. I never learned to code, and I don't intend to start just to put a counter on my page. If you're reading this and are a wiz-kid web author or hotshot Java monkey and you feel compelled to help, I won't turn you away.

I'm sure someone will be beating my door down any second to get on board for the project.

I would have thought you've saved more than that. I guess you were about a pack a day? Although I have NO CLUE what cigarettes cost. I think they're about $5 here, sometimes I see the prices on the gas station marquees. Also, you're probably using the price per pack if you bought a carton - cheaper than the single pack price. Either way, I like it.

Your observations are correct. I smoked on average 25 per day, and purchased by the carton. A carton is about $30... so each smoke is about 15 cents. Per pack price is about $3.50 if you don't buy in bulk. (Missouri has a low cigarette tax compared to most states. That is why Minnesota is $5ish)

You might say smoking cost me about 15 cents an hour if I wasn't drinking or gambling. If I was... it would be about 60 cents an hour.

Plug in the gas-station-per-pack numbers to really make yourself feel good.

I sent an email to my brother and all his CG genius friends about your Java calculator request. We'll see if any come through. In the meantime, check out Sin City, Snakes on a Plane, and Spiderman 3, now on DVD!

ps. I look forward to your spending all of your non-smoking windfall on me soon!

I thought there would be no math.

Ok, a total random thought at a totally obscene hour... if our species depended on changing a roll of toilet paper, we would have long ago been selected against...

No.

I've been to places where it isn't used at all.

Althought, we did referr to them as "savages."

Does your "Money Saved" counter compensate for the cost of nicotine patches??

"left coast" speaks!

ramsky - No unfortunately it does not. My savings to date would be something like -$350 if patches were included.

The good news is that I purchased the necessary supply in 2007 FSA dollars. So my "moving forward" cost is $0.

Good to hear from you. I'm starting to think about a trip out there now that the smoking is behind me. Should I take some riding lessons?

another "left coast" speaks. This is Norann's brother...I will ask around, but usually everyone here is ready to just get the hell out of here when its time to go....we have been on 12 plus hour days finishing up John Adams for HBO, and Nim's island. So most of us are sick of computers, and cant wait to stare at a wall instead when the day is over.
I did find a page that has links to other meters. Scroll to the bottom...

I hope this helps!

Mike - I hope you are well. Norann keeps us up on all of your projects, and insists we watch the credits for your films to the very end. It sounds like you, and the crew that keep us entertained, are burning the candle at both ends. Thanks for creating good stuff to take us away from the everyday world.

On the Javascript thing, not a big deal really. The comment was really kind of tounge-in-cheek anyway. I run the IT department at my company, and if it was something I really needed to have, I'd have made it happen by now.

If someone wants to put their coding skills to the test, they can have at it. It actually sounds like something my developer would like to write.

By all means, schedule a trip. I will make sure that I am out of town when you arrive!! You can have the whole place to yourself. Just you and the cats, and the furballs!!

Better yet . . .

I'll bunk with the horses, you can bunk with the cats.

What color lipstick looks best on the cats? I'll go with whatever color you normally use on them.

And don't get any ideas about shacking up with me and the cats when the horses kick you out for snoring. The deal has been struck.

That money you saved should have just covered the Jager and cigars the other night. I would have paid double not to feel like that the next morning...
